Creativity is not Innovation!
Creativity is about moving away from the standard way of doing things. It is about generating new ideas of engaging old problems. It embodies a sense of wonderment, excitement and puzzle of the universe we live in. It is essentially a form of "divine discontent": it is about constantly re-inventing ourselves. It is about a journey of exploration: a journey from self consciousness to consciousness of the self.
Creativity is about delving into this larger Self; it is about discovering our deep purpose, our callings and our
raison d’être. It is essentially an inner journey, of establishing a conversation with ourselves. Artists are entrepreneurs. Art is fidelity to failure – a poet once wrote. His point was not just that to risk failure is the calling of artists, but that to be dissatisfied is fundamental to their temperament. Artists strive to reach what they cannot grasp, and they look upon what they achieve as ever falling short of what they imagine. As the result, artists rarely allow the ghost of past ‘success’ to haunt their capacity to innovate into the future.
But creativity is not innovation. It is not adequate to generate new ideas: it is equally important that they result in innovation: new goods or services. Creativity is a pre-condition for innovation but it is not innovation.
The challenge before entrepreneurs in the creative sector lies in making a successful transition from being embedded in the world of new ideas to being embedded in the world of implementation. It is about moving from the world of ideas to that of action.

Entrepreneurship in the Arts: The Indian Challenge
By Anmol Vellani
This session will argue that, in the Indian context, we need to frame an understanding of arts entrepreneurship that is not limited to the enterprise of translating knowledge, expertise and products in the arts into viable business. It will ask whether creating value through entrepreneurial activity might mean something different in the arts compared to other domains. The location of the arts in India, it will be argued, often compels the entrepreneur in the arts to confront the larger tensions between culture and market. This tension raises questions and challenges, and creates responsibilities of the kind unfamiliar in mainstream business contexts. The challenge of altering mindsets and views about the relationship between the arts, government, the market and the public, which were cultivated in the earlier period of Nehruvian socialism, will also be discussed. Although changes in India’s economic policies and environment since the 1990s have made arts entrepreneurship a more attractive proposition, the session will draw attention to how much more could be done to facilitate entrepreneurial activity in this field.

Some of the common questions asked by entrepreneurs are: How do i select people? what kinds of rules and policies should i make? How would i compensate someone? The module will attempt to provide an overview of people management in creative businesses with particular emphasis on hands on practice workshops.
